Progress in Karate is measured periodically by a formal grading at which time examiners look at progress the student has made. The examiner also looks closely at not only the techniques are executed but the attitude and spirit in performing them. Although the examination is strict and does not allow for injuries sustained before the grading, the examiner does offer, individual advice and encouragemnet at the end of the grading.
There are no short cuts to achieving the belt except occassionally when an examiner will allow an exceptional student to jump a grade.
